“The Arthur M. Sackler Colloquia on the Science of Science Communication began in 2012 with an effort to survey the state of the art of empirical social science research in science communication and focused on the communication dynamics surrounding issues in science, engineering, and medicine. The second colloquium highlighted the particular challenges with communicating about science that involves controversy, and was an important impetus for the consensus study report Communicating Science Effectively: A Research Agenda. Evolving from past colloquia, this third colloquium will focus on the consensus study as a framework for advancing both research and practice in science communication. It will explore ways to build capacity for and foster the use of evidence-based strategies for engaging the public with science and ensuring its appropriate use.”

1) Do what you want to get done,
2) tailor your approach to what your audience wants,
3) the deficit model is mostly wrong. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/dpzWiUO1Mg
Crossing-cutting #scicomm themes: 1. Align your strategy with your goals 2. Tailor to your audience 3.Communicating science is particularly difficult 4. The deficit model is mostly wrong 5. Mental models matter 6. Framing is critical 7. Go "glocal" #SacklerSciComm

Leshner: only scientists are stuck w/ what science says. Others can interpret or ignore sci however they see fit (cough, politicians, cough) #SacklerSciComm
[Aside...IMHO a lot of scientists ignore evidence when it conflicts with their beliefs/values, because scientists are people too] #weareallhuman #sacklerscicomm
8. Today's media environment is competitive and complex 9. Engage formally with the public (in dialogue) 10. Effective public engagement is not easy #SacklerSciComm
Leshner: With social media there are no gatekeepers. Communicating with the public (dialog) is much more effective than at the public (monolog) #SacklerSciComm
Alan Leshner encourages scientists to engage with the public and to listen to them for effective #scicomm. Watch #SacklerSciComm online https://t.co/gFJJE7fkOa
Leshner highlights research Qs in @theNASEM Communication Science Effectively report (it set a research agenda): 1) what structure & processes for public engagement are most effectively? #SacklerSciComm
Leshner: "Listening is hard." Also difficult: changing your #scicomm strategy based on what your audience(s) are telling you. But we must do it. #SacklerSciComm
One of the greatest #scicomm mistakes is speaking about what you want to speak, not what audience wants to hear - Leshner at #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/sXertjBOQq

The science to inform how to communicate & engage about science is far from new. Fischoff mentions 1989 @thenasem report Improving Risk Communication, but the field is much older than this #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/lJjGnll27W
@Mammondy agree, for most people it conjures marriage.. but it is better than communication in that it implies dialogue #SacklerSciComm what are the alternatives?
#sacklerscicomm Alan Leshner has the same "pet question" as I do: How do we communicate science effectively amid conflicts over beliefs and values? Especially when the sciences is discordant with their life experiences, values, and beliefs? #SciComm
Extremely valuable and practical ideas being discussed at #SacklerSciComm today, essential point: "meet people where they are" in order to engage in effective communication of science-based information. https://t.co/Sc2NkQSx1Jhttps://t.co/98HkXyLdKu

Baruch Fischhoff: We live with uncertainty all the time, the question is how do you present it in a way that people understand and feel respected. And you need to test those messages. #SacklerSciComm
@FromTheLabBench ive noticed that the slides are frequently underwhelming at this conference, which i think speaks to the divide between #scicomm researchers and practitioners #sacklerscicomm
Discussion: Leshner: People would love to have certainty if we could give it to them, but we live in a world with uncertainty. How to present so people feel it's more honest. #SacklerSciComm
How can we better integrate research & practice in science communication? Learn more @theNASciences #SacklerSciComm. Find a live stream here: https://t.co/gxRHdXOFHw #KState @KS_SCI
Leshner: Funding is distributed along disciplinary lines. Until we have review panels who can *comfortably* navigate across disciplines, $ for this research will be problem #sacklerscicomm
@Paleophile If for some reason you would like HS student input on anything science - let me know I should be able to have student respond within 30 or sooner depending on time of day. #sacklerSciComm
"I always like the notion of allowing the public to help design the research agenda even though scientist often hate that.”-Do they hate that or are they not incentivized for it in promotion/tenure/reappointment or by the funders? #SacklerSciComm
Q: re incentive structure for excellent scicomm. How can "entire structure of science" change to pay attn to sci of scicomm, put more effort in? #sacklerscicomm
Do so-called "opinion leaders" (e.g., @BillNye @neiltyson @algore count as #scicomm practioners? How do they help/harm the scicomm environment? How do we get them to pay attention to the research? #SacklerSciComm
McNutt question: Tyson mentioned that communication is a lot of work. What can we do to increase science incentives to communicate well. #SacklerSciComm
@Marcia4Science Leschner: The truth is, the older generation will need to go away. Young scientists get it. It's the older generation that says "you're wasting your time". It will roll into the incentive system eventually. #SacklerSciComm
.@Marcia4Science: Scientific incentive system does not reward the effort needed for scientists to be good at #scicomm. How can we change the reward structure? #SacklerSciComm
I’m following #SacklerSciComm with huge interest, and also wishing it weren’t double-booked against #NCA17, where there are a lot of folks with rhetoric of science expertise.
Q in room: how to get scientists to pay attention to scioscicomm? Leshner: "older generation is going to have to go away. Younger scientists get it and want to do it." I've certainly seen that here on twitter! #sacklerscicomm
Baruch Fischhoff: Research funding policy disencourages interdisciplinary collaborative work as would need to be done in #scicomm research. #SacklerSciComm
How can we change how we reward scientists, so they will put effort into #scicomm? It is changing - more and more scientists now get "it".
#SacklerSciComm
Provocative point by Alan Leshner (not from the NAS report) is that only scientists are "stuck" with accepting the results of science. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/4Q9UEefx9I
#NASmemeber Baruch Fischhoff & Alan Leshner on communicating science to the public. Without public acceptance, why else would scientists do what they do? #SacklerSciComm
@theNASEM report https://t.co/V6LAEx6wEyhttps://t.co/5BTga5bo8c
@Marcia4Science Fischhoff: I'm less optimistic. I don't think a junior faculty would risk jeopardizing their tenure track. The older generation needs to go away but so does their legacy. #SacklerSciComm #scicomm
Young scientists seem to get the value of communication as a scientist, says Alan Leshner, but we need an incentive structure, says Baruch Fischhoff #SacklerSciComm #SciComm
Great question - how to incentivize scientists to be good science communicators. Reference to @neiltyson "It took a lot of effort to be a good communicator." #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/AbZzpIs8KR
'it'll take a brave junior person to risk their tenure/promotion to change the incentive structure' - 'need to build up the training structure' #sacklerscicomm
To better #scicomm, the older generation needs to get with it and follow the lead of the younger scientists who see the importance of effective communication--Leshner #sacklerscicomm
Fischoff: I'm less optimistic. Both the older and their legacy have to go away. It takes a grave young scientist to buck the reward system. #SacklerSciComm
"the older generation, they will have to go away because young scientist get it. They do understand and they want to do it. It is the older generation who says you are wasting your time”-Leshner
Junior scholars "are being strangled by the older people”-Fischhoff #SacklerSciComm
#sacklerscicomm Discussion about incentives: Young scientists get the importance of #SciComm. Grad programs increasingly see importance. But the incentive system needs to catch up. T&P process needs to catch up. I bet many scientists agree.
@Marcia4Science Leshner (in sum): Wait until we get rid of the olds. Things have been changing within institutions, but not fast enough.
Fischhoff Iin sum); Not as optimistic as Alan. Too much risk for early career scientists to spend time on #scicomm. #SacklerSciComm
It seems like a lot of proposed solutions to problems in sci and academia are essentially waiting for people to retire. #sacklerscicomm https://t.co/YvlJzMYJp6
Q in room: how to get scientists to pay attention to scioscicomm? Leshner: "older generation is going to have to go away. Younger scientists get it and want to do it." I've certainly seen that here on twitter! #sacklerscicomm
"Go “Glocal”. Take a global issue and make it meaningful at a local level”. Alan Leshner's message is spot on at #SacklerSciComm today in DC. @aaas @_SciComm @theNASciences

Describing dense scientific research is no simple task. This #CornellCALS course teaches young scientists to communicate their work through storytelling. #CUsciStory https://t.co/eLALP1h3lY
Yet younger scientists face a fair degree of risk to "spend any time" on "communication" rather than "science." In truth, these are inextricable. Valuable science relies on effective communication. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/mZuSu0mG41

Leshner: questioning the promotion & tenure system that holds back younger academics who want to engage in better science communication w the public #sacklerscicomm
Great question - deficit model neither works to communicate science nor convince scientists to engage w/ members of the public. How do we address this? #SacklerSciComm
@Sarah_Mojarad @Marcia4Science Can think of a LOT of young scientists who ARE putting communications at the centre of their enterprise @DrBalch @McCauley_Lab @pinskylab & many more! They are also scientist leaders.
#SacklerSciComm
Leshner: "Everyone's secretly a little bit human. Scientists have a little more trouble being publicly human, and when they do they get ridiculed. But it definitely matters to be human when communicating." #SacklerSciComm
Leshner: Scientists showing their human side is an acquired skill. "Everybody secretly is human...and it definitely matters being a human when communicating with other humans." #SacklerSciComm #SciComm #SciEngage
How do we approach the human aspect of science communication to make it accessible to the public? "Well, everyone is secretly human... even scientists!" #SacklerSciComm

John Burris of Burroughs Wellcome: BWF sees a big issue in scientists communicating with each other. Also sees "huge oral gap" for young scientists: not taught how to speak effectively.
#sacklerscicomm
What is “effective” #scicomm? Framed here as making society safe for science. What about making science safe for society? Science positivism bias here at #sacklerscicomm
John Burris describes “whimsically illustrated” books targeting middle schoolers as #scicomm; lots of great #sciencecomics work happening, like @jayeperview, @01FirstSecond, & @SquidtoonsComic #SacklerSciComm
#sacklerscicomm John Burris: Just giving a speech and talking to people does not make you a successful communicator. --> My reaction as a communication professor: YES! Training in professional talking and listening is necessary for effective #SciComm.
"We've moved away from encouraging graduate students to speak as part of their training - poster sessions instead of seminars etc. Creates an oral skills gap". #SacklerSciComm
Challenge to science communications - Education system has moved away from spoken presentations, moving more toward poster presentation. #SacklerSciComm
“If you communicate science it is important that you can get up in front of people and speak about your science and you understand your audience and you can provide information to the audience in a fashion that they respond to and understand.”-Burris
#SacklerSciComm
Increase of poster sessions, at the expense of actual speaking opportunities, has a negative effect on #scicomm training of young scientists.--John Burris #SacklerSciComm
"Most scientists are closet humans" - bringing the human capacities for accessibility, authenticity and joy into #scicomm Alan Leshner @AAAS #sacklerscicomm
Burris: Important for scientist to able to get up and speak about their research accounting for their audience. Poster sessions don't train that. #SacklerSciComm
I mean OK yes getting up in front of ppl is important but "audience" is not always literally AN AUDIENCE in a theater or conference room - poster sessions do provide great opportunities to talk about your research and actually engage in dialogue #sacklerscicomm
John Burris of @BWFUND : Move away from speech classes in HS & toward poster sessions in grad school--> Huge gap among young scis in terms of verbal comms skills #sacklerscicomm

This varies between fields, but its definitely getting to be a problem. I did one poster and at least a dozen talks in my graduate career. Definitely not the norm today #SciComm #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/4Xv5vpeqYT
"We've moved away from encouraging graduate students to speak as part of their training - poster sessions instead of seminars etc. Creates an oral skills gap". #SacklerSciComm
going to science festivals and colloquia is fine but scientists need to go where people are. what incentives reward volunteer work at local science fairs? giving presentations or hosting dialogues at senior centers? synagogues? #Sacklerscicomm
@Sarah_Mojarad Poster sessions can be a great #SciComm opportunity - if you use them right. A chance to practice your pitch and revise it on the fly with each visitor to the poster. BUT everyone involved (presenters, visitors, organizers) has to treat them in this way. #SacklerSciComm
Indeed, John Burris underlines the importance of training young scientists to empower them to stand up in front of lay audiences, understand them and speak clearly. No #scicomm is possible without scientists themselves #SacklerSciComm
Important role of #philanthropy: supporting innovative ways of #scicomm and #sciengage. Experimentation from @SciPhilOrg @BWFUND & Rita Allen Fnd #SacklerSciComm
@Mammondy @RockyRohde I agree. Conferences should sure that senior people are walking around and actually engaging with students or early career researchers at poster sessions or do 3-5 min flash talks for poster people to make sure that there is that interaction. But they usually do. #SacklerSciComm

Necessary team for #Sci Comm on a science issue according to Fischhoff at #SacklerSciComm. Is this the antidote to death of expertise? https://t.co/orWwfVZNQJ
#sacklerscicomm Building the case for basic science research funding: Should we use fear or hope in our #SciComm messaging? Good Q. However, what about not calling it basic research. Does public get that term? What about calling it fundamental research? Any research on that?
.@Marcia4Science: The #Eclipse2017 was a great event. What can scientific community do to find activities that capture public imagination and excitement?
Kastner: Learn from astronomy community to extend elsewhere. #SacklerSciComm
The American public was fascinated with this summer's solar eclipse says NAS President @Marcia4Science. How does #scicomm recreate that around other science? #SacklerSciComm
Is it just me or are the funders @ #SacklerSciComm mainly thinking about science promotion or marketing at best when they say “communication“? What if evidence shows that more of the former decreases trust in evidence? Limiting this to “appreciating the wonders of science“?
Speaking of the public's fascination with the eclipse and Ligo, Kastner says "we have to learn from the astronomy community who has done this (science communications) so well. #SacklerSciComm

Great question on the role of philanthropy in supporting experiments in #scicomm. I've thought of science philanthropy as conservative, but @BWFUND cites a need for more failure - as a measure of success #SacklerSciComm
Is it just me or are the funders @ #SacklerSciComm mainly thinking about science promotion or marketing at best when they say “communication“? What if evidence shows that more of the former decreases trust in evidence? Limiting this to “appreciating the wonders of science“?
YES! John Burris @BWFund - #philanthropy should be nimble, take some risks, and be OK with failure (and learn from it). #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/yHLyDOmRqD
Important role of #philanthropy: supporting innovative ways of #scicomm and #sciengage. Experimentation from @SciPhilOrg @BWFUND & Rita Allen Fnd #SacklerSciComm

Kastner: Many areas of private investment where we also need government investment. Philanthropists can take more risk and take longer view, be nimble and act quickly. #SacklerSciComm
What is the role of philanthropy in supporting scientists who wish to write books for the public? The @SloanFoundation has a program for this, but they seem to be in the minority. #SacklerSciComm
Scientists are the only ones who have to always labor under the onus of science. Others can choose to use opinions and disregard science. #SacklerSciComm
By contrast to government funding, philanthropy can afford to take more risks. Also to expect some results on longer time-scales - experimentation take iteration. #SacklerSciComm
Kastner: Government fund is good at protecting the taxpayers' money but that implies they are very conservative. Philanthropy can take more risks. #SacklerSciComm
Elizabeth Christopherson, Rita Allen Foundation: We need more opportunities for philanthropic orgs to get together, talk about best practices, talk about good evaluation measures. #SacklerSciComm
Burris: "Evaluation is the toughest nut to crack" - simplest measures (# of talks, # of activities, etc.) don't really characterize impact. #SacklerSciComm
Burris @BWFUND: evaluation is toughest nut to crack bc simplest measures rarely reflect actual success of what you've done. eg number of hits or citations or even publications do not show impact or long-range effects of an effort. #sacklerscicomm
Burris: It extraordinarily difficult to track long term impact. We mostly only have short-term quantitative measures. Qualitative has been mostly story. #SacklerSciComm
“#Evaluation is a tough nut to crack. It rarely measures the #impact you’ve had. We measure what we can track.” Couldn't agree more! The Q is: What's a better #metric that we should look at then? #SacklerSciComm #analytics
Philanthropists at #SacklerSciComm :Philanthropys should be experimental - and comfortable with failure. Share best practices and maybe failures too - can still be worth sharing. Hear hear.
#sacklerscicomm Marc Kastner: Role of philanthropy is special bc the fed gov is very good at protecting the taxpayer money when it comes to research. Philanthropy can be more risk-taking, nimble, and act quickly. Any data that shows innovation derived from phil vs. fed money?
Quantitate #evaluation is very difficult in both #scicomm and #pedagogy /#teaching #sacklerscicomm. #qualitative evaluation with #anecdotes and #anecdata are not very effective. We need real experiments for the #science of #scicomm
Burris of @BWFUND: simple measures of evaluation rarely reflect the impact of what you’ve done. We often reduce this to things we can measure (# of pubs, grants, speeches), but it’s extraordinarily difficult to understand broader impacts. #SacklerSciComm
Science communication and public engagement so important, we’ve heard here at #SacklerSciComm, but funders say they would put their money on more scicomm “research” not engagement and impact Hmmm...
Great to see this observation at #SacklerSciComm: "Too rarely do we do science". It's shameful how little we turn to experiments & basic scientific method to make decisions in communication.
Measuring impact in scicomm is tough. I'm biased, but longitudinal social network analysis is one way to approach this. #Sacklerscicomm https://t.co/jhU9Gk31ae
Burris: "Evaluation is the toughest nut to crack" - simplest measures (# of talks, # of activities, etc.) don't really characterize impact. #SacklerSciComm
So many of those tweeting at #sacklerscicomm have been on twitter for years but have <5000 tweets, some <3000, some <1000. We need your science - please share more often, promote others as well.

Yes thinking long term is a challenge when there’s effort and resources are involved. Not easy for most to be patient, especially those who want quick rewards. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/bbEfF9hxNC
By contrast to government funding, philanthropy can afford to take more risks. Also to expect some results on longer time-scales - experimentation take iteration. #SacklerSciComm

The number of public corporations in America has dropped by half since 1997. "Scientifically half is a lot!" We have another contender for best line of the day. #SacklerSciComm
I have to disagree with GeraldDavis, the social science equivalent of #climatechange is #motivatedreasoning. Its a huge problem that we don't know how to deal with that a lot of people ignore. #sacklerSciComm #scicomm

Shout-out by the speaker for The @ConversationUK as a good platform for discussing academic topics with a larger audience with respectful dialogue #SacklerSciComm
Jerry Davis is busting myths about how to #SciComm...
Write an academic book...for your colleagues
Write a popular book...for your parents
Go on PBS or NPR...for the Volvo Subaru owners
Write a blog post...no, just no, and definitely don't read the comments

“Public policy is informed by stylized facts about how the economy works.” Tweets OK 4 some research comm but need other venues 4 nuanced dialogue - Gerald F Davis #SacklerSciComm
Gerald Davis: To get your message out to the world, short pieces at reputable sources is his (tried and true) method of communication #SacklerSciComm #scicomm #informalscience
Jerry Davis is concerned that we’re “incentivized” to do “tweet-worthy work”, making it harder to communicate nuanced topics. I’d argue that you’ve just gotta adjust your approach. #SacklerSciComm
Jerry Davis shows real examples of trying (and trying again) different channels to reach your #audience. @ConversationUS was the way to go for him, after trying science pubs, mass-media pubs, interviews, & blog posts to get the word out. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/07LThgoRj2
Great to see #SacklerSciComm trending! Science communication is so important to let everyone know about new research findings and to share the data. And this includes science on Twitter. 👩🔬💡🔬@theNASEM

@gmbritton Yeah. #SacklerSciComm How to collaborate? Empathy—and *listening* to stories. To @laniwendtyoung from Samoa, for example, on EuroAmerican arrogance in #scicomm: We're all in the same canoe, but whose canoe is it? This is “the salt water of the real world.” https://t.co/h8Pjc6JYRY

@LouWoodley @ConversationUK Not really. It's more like an echo chamber for the activist left in academia to wallow in their own groupthink. A bit like your conference really! #SacklerSciComm
I really appreciate that practioners keep bring mentioned at #sacklerscicomm. They have a central role in #scicomm and often get ignore with the focus on scientists and their audiences.
MY thoughts: Don't devalue social media. You need to meet your audience where they are. Like it or not, Americans look to social media for news and information. #SacklerSciComm #SciComm
Our perspectives come from our backgrounds, our experiences. Diversity is absolutely necessary to bring different perspectives to teams. #SacklerSciComm

Laurie - How to bridge the gap:
Strategy 1
Cognitive Integration - Developing understanding of one another's perspective
#SacklerSciComm #scicomm #informalscience
Cognitive integration: I don't have to know what you know, but I need to understand how you come at a problem. Stepping in someone else's shoes. #SacklerScicomm
@LouWoodley IMO it is often best for specialists to work on their own, while talking to other disciplines. Multi-author papers too often have weak quality control #SacklerSciComm
How to bridge perceptual gaps #1: Cognitive integration - develop understanding of one another's perspective #SacklerSciComm via L. Weingart https://t.co/xrzvTkANOp
Weingart: Cognitive integration helps bridge perceptual gaps. Take a step in someone else's shoes to understand their perspective. #SacklerSciComm #SciComm
If a conference emphasizes the power of #storytelling, it would be nice if presentations started w/a #story & not with "My research is focusing on..." and "I am currently working on...". Let's make sure we #practice what we preach. #sacklerscicomm #scicomm
Weingard: yes, yes, yes!! Everything about this talk on interdisciplinary teams is spot on, but not explicitly discussed in interdisciplinary teams #SacklerSciComm (plus beautiful presentation visuals!)

Collaboration and conflict
Is conflict good or bad for collaboration? Teams with conflict can be more innovative, but it can also be disruptive.
Major key - How is the conflict expressed?
#SacklerSciComm #scicomm #informalscience
Weingart: Important elements. Trust (can I rely on you), respect (do I hold you in high regard), and like (do I want to spend time with this person.). #SacklerSciComm
There's no one answer - evaluating impact depends on your goals. If you never articulate what you are hoping to acheive...you'll have a hard time judging how successful your efforts are. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/g5udCo3ax0
Conflict expression can be expressed with two axes - directness and intensity. Direct and intense = argumentative. Non-direct and high intensity = undermining behaviours e.g. things like persistent teasing. #SacklerSciComm
Undermining others during moments of conflict end up dissolving team cohesion. The best way to communicate effectively is to be open and willing to hear other sides. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/kq8ngdS4zAhttps://t.co/L9lznb9RoR
There are many ways to undermine someone else. You can ignore them, you can dismiss them, you can tease them. [I would add: you can be condescending - don't do this at home..] #SacklerSciComm
I really like how Laurie W. is going through the directness vs. intensity graph to explain conflict expression. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/njzdobOtIW
Weingart: When disagreement isn't as direct but still intense, we have undermining behavior. This includes teasing as a method to exclude others. #SacklerSciComm
Same is true for public perceptions of scientists! They might respect but not like scientists... which has implications for public trust in science. Can't wait to hear from Susan Fiske on that. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/hXIlpImmnJ
#sacklerscicomm Laurie Weingart: Trust, liking, and respect are all essential for interdisciplinary #SciComm teams to bridge the perceptual gap of different disciplines who work together. We also need more cognitive integration (understanding each other perspectives).
Good point, but fun for whom? K-12? Grad students? Bench scientists? Journo's? All see "fun" differently. *Interesting* and *engaging* narratives imbued w/ relevant facts = *fun* for most people, in different ways. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/6zZ6xTaAoc

@JTspartz More important - for what goal? Is this an attempt to get people to like science? Or to educate? Or to engage? Because science of #scicomm suggests this wouldn't be useful for 1st or 3rd goal. #SacklerSciComm
@FromTheLabBench That's a view I've seen for polarised topics, but which comes first: the polarising of the topic (activists, etc), or the people's views on scientists? (I tend to lean to former in the case of polarised topics.) #SacklerSciComm

Kathleen Tierney: "More information is not going to lead to better understanding and action."

Hierarchies of credibility in research community creates obstacles for science communication ~ Kathleen Tierney #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/lIh5qSxCph
Kathleen Tierney highlights the very useful concept: Hierarchies of Credibility within scientific communities toward prospect of improved science. #SacklerSciComm

Fabulous question from Kenyan scientist / science communicator re: challenges for funders/collaborators in understanding audience/community (and sounds like, ignoring the groups on the ground who are embedded in those communities) #sacklerscicomm
Hey #SacklerSciComm: we're holding a storytelling event (do #scicomm rather than learn about it) in March. Learn more over lunch with @vgwschutte in the West Court, wearing a navy dress with colorful, horizontal stripes. She's super friendly! https://t.co/JHTVrJDiTK
True, any given lab will have 5-10 different cultures, but odds are it's the same 5-10 different cultures across labs. There are still a huge number of cultures that are underrepresented in STEM fields. #SacklerSciComm
Is there a crisis of complacency within science? And is it tied to the reward system in academia? Resounding Yes from the audience. Current topic at #SacklerSciComm
Yes, yes, teaching communication skills, start form undergrad or even high school! Good communication skills is the most important lesson we can teach at any level! #SacklerSciComm
@franksesno asks “how do we break the complacency of science?” Kathleen Tierney responds “we need to change reward process in academia” #sacklerscicomm
Sum up on the #SacklerSciComm session on #collaboration: Teach passion, teach the skills to communicate to someone who is not an expert, teach how to solve a real problem in the world, change the reward system in academia.
Answers: Curriculum changing wanting to change things to just finding a job. Teaching communication. Changing the reward system in Academia. #SacklerSciComm
Crisis in complacency of academics? Not what I see in our @COMPASSscicomm workshops. For most the question is no longer why but how? Need to scale up training in #GradSciCom & value & incentives within academia #SacklerSciComm
@SunshineMenezes Science & politics were ever separated; when? Which epoch? 😅 Both are bound to societal concerns, shared environmental concerns or bounty. #SciComm is merely a medium for transmission of science! #SacklerSciComm
@BioBeef Last used that quote in a post about vaccine "discussions" in comments on social media - applies there too, I feel https://t.co/kUbLrkvUTF #SacklerSciComm
Wonderful statement on interdisciplinarity: "Discoveries occur at the boundaries of disciplines. Diversity has positive effect on quality and on influence of the science.." And some still think in terms of narrow compartmentalization and discipline conservatism? #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/dExj9kqC6L

Whether I'm at a symposium about #openscience (my day job) or about #scicomm, I inevitably hear the same refrain to mass applause: "We need to change the reward system for academia"
So let's get with the program! #SacklerSciComm
@CocoNell2 Difficult to imagine them ever being separated, no? Communications perhaps lends an appearance or perception - or simply adds to one’s understanding of this dynamic? #SacklerScicomm
#sacklerscicomm Kathleen Tierney: Culture of complacency in #SciComm will not change until we change the rewards system in academia & until we bake comm & engagement into the T&P process. 100% YES! I didn't start my interest in comm & engage until post-tenure! I'm not the only 1

Probably have to frame this in a functional way to the #SacklerSciComm audience -- if you were more diverse, you would be less terrible at communicating to a diverse public. https://t.co/ElMKvJOujs

🙄 #SacklerSciComm will never accomplish anything if we start from the assumption that science and politics were ever once, or could ever be, separate. #tired https://t.co/JsyK8LBMzr
Tierney: research shows you can be a passionate scientist and not be perceived as advocate. Davis: don't know if we can any longer separate science and politics (whether you want to separate them or not). Weingart: iterative process of science gets lost in comms #SacklerSciComm
What happens to credibility if you do not take a position on passion/emotion? #AudienceCentered req’s our empathetic dialog, a natural discourse w/ people. W/O it, people will not trust or enter relationships. #SacklerScicomm https://t.co/po0Bxo323p
What happens to credibility if you take a position on passion vs objectivity? If scientists don't show passion why would anyone else care? The importance of the Message vs the Messenger. #SacklerSciComm
@_beccaharrison Hear, here! 👂🏼 Why avoid what our audiences experience in their understanding of science & politics? Makes no sense, #amIRight? #SacklerSciComm #SciComn
@SunshineMenezes Dear, that is dreadful, but what did organizers anticipate? Were they being #AudienceCentered & in touch w/ recent societal upticks?! Effective #SciComm prepares, researches & includes such things! #SacklerScicomm
Common refrain @ #scicomm gatherings that needs to be communicated up to uni admin leaders! Are they out there listening to #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/tGysNVR8v3
Whether I'm at a symposium about #openscience (my day job) or about #scicomm, I inevitably hear the same refrain to mass applause: "We need to change the reward system for academia"
So let's get with the program! #SacklerSciComm
@Mammondy Now THERE is a culture-shifting thought! I mean, why consider the value in being #AudienceCentered, right? How could we stay entrenched w/ blinders in a rapidly-evolving society of science, politics & SciComm?! 😏 #SacklerSciComm
@drkeegansawyer @Sarah_Mojarad THE question that speaks to having an aduencw in the center, with aims of #RelationshipBuilding, & grounded in effective #SciComm strategy planning! #SacklerSciComm
@LizNeeley @LizNeeley, there’s an excellent point abt the value of having an#AudienceCentered stance when building a colloquia program. Shouldn’t #SciComm practitioners deserve such an approach? #SacklerSciComm
@Sarah_Mojarad As The song goes, “Same as it ever was...” meaning, the onus of #SciComm format/messsging remains in the hands of communicator: why not start w/ #AudienceCentered planning? That’ll frame #SocMedia lengths/context/etc. #SacklerSciComm
#Cimmunications101: applies equally to #SciComm, #SciPolicy, #HigherEdComms...ALL Comms begin w/ this gold nugget of #AudienceCentered approach! #SacklerScicomm https://t.co/1c09F7ojMR
@theNAEng @FromTheLabBench Not exactly. Depends entirely upon the culture in which the team dynamic & communications are happening - #CulturalValues dictate how ppl respond to conflict, Q’s of respect or hierarchy, values of authority figures & more.#SacklerSciComm
@CocoNell2 AND cultures prioritize these three values differently: those Q’s of how people deal w/ ambiguity, working in a feminine culture, long-term vs short-term time perspectives impact your point. #SciComm is not immune either. #SacklerSciComm
@SunshineMenezes Tied to race and class issues that few people are comfortable discussing let alone in a public forum. Ask yourself how did I get to this place and why? #sacklerscicomm
Looks like there’s more spam than content on the #SacklerScicomm hashtag at the moment - wonder if anyone’s noticed, or if they’re too busy talking to realize ...
@Sarah_Mojarad Awesome! I wished we could attend with our 2 - times awarded #Science #comics for literacy & #scicomm ! #SacklerSciComm ! https://t.co/lML21hRc0Z
Would love to see more scientists recognize science (who/what gets funding, what research questions we ask, what we recognize as knowledge) is inherently political. So many times we skirt this issue #SacklerSciComm
@CocoNell2 @FromTheLabBench This measurement planning is also best we’ll-discussed/fleshed our at beginning of #SciComm campaign or research dissemination, e.g. AB testing? small panel impressions? smas & format of measurements are crucial. #SacklerSciComm

Alan Leshner kicks off #SacklerSciComm ‘our job is the betterment of humankind’. If we don’t communicate to public why do this? #scicomm https://t.co/nhDxmMrxqQ
I'm seeing a lot of #SacklerSciComm conversation about how to broach diversity largely on racial/gender lines. Wanted to also throw out there a #STEMed perspective - #SciComm diversity through diff modes of engaging/learning: hands-on, problem-based, #citSci, local issues, etc.
#SacklerSciComm will the event be available online afterwards? I failed to get the day off. I just tried to join but is lunch time. Of course, SciComms need food :)
@LouWoodley Something I don’t see following the #sacklerscicomm hashtag is how far we’ve come which is very important. #SciComm has exploded since I was a grad student - which was a just a little more than a decade ago. We should be very encouraged by that!
Alan Leshner kicks off #SacklerSciComm ‘our job is the betterment of humankind’. If we don’t communicate to public why do this? #scicomm https://t.co/nhDxmMrxqQ
So far, I'm disheartened to see nothing really novel or bold (in my opinion) in #SacklerSciComm followed by photos of all-male, all-boomer panels - can't help but feel like our field is stalled, recycling old straw in an old broom. https://t.co/KzdSAIckAO
Did you know that @theNASciences has a program exploring intersections of science, art and culture? We organize interdisciplinary salons called #DASER, #sciart exhibitions, readings of science-themed plays and more! All free and open to the public. #SacklerSciComm #Scicomm
@Sheril_ @LouWoodley Really glad you raised this - yes, we see far more attention. But how do we know we are doing better? Are we reaching more people? a more diverse audience? are fellow citizens better informed? How are we doing vis a vis our challenges? #SacklerSciComm @brookesimler
@DoctorZen #ouch What does this say about the colloquia program, its program Committee & funders? Where is the #AudienceCentered approach in this rapidly-evolving society & her diversity? #SciComm must reflect this or face the consequences. #SacklerSciComm
@HowardGobstein @LouWoodley @brookesimler When I was new to Duke in 2007, their traditional comms team warned me not to blog about Duke science. In 2017, I’m running #scicomm workshops @michiganstateu w @JohnBesley to train scientists to tell stories. Yes, we’ve come a v long way. #SacklerSciComm
Not going to lie - I would like to see these #scioscicomm panels and researchers at #sacklerscicomm include more early career researchers. I hope their Building Capacity for Scicomm awards when to some young peeps.
This is why we need visible opportunities for everyone to #scicomm, while not putting on URMs all the responsibility to fix the system (esp vs tenure/prof time demands). Thoughts? @ACSDiversity @AcsWcc @acs_cwd @ACS_IC @ACS_Outreach #SacklerSciComm #wishIwerethere https://t.co/hAeMuTVgU6
great point by WOC African scientist about why *who the messenger is* matters in #scicomm. Very salient given the honestly troubling demographics of the room. #sacklerscicomm
@Sheril_ @HowardGobstein @LouWoodley @brookesimler @michiganstateu @JohnBesley I'd like to agree, but years have passed & progress is mired in reticence, time priority debates, value of #SciComm efforts towards tenure, lack of #SciComm training across the board,,, #SacklerSciComm
@2020science However, I'll grant progress in many areas - without reservation. Still, pockets where #SciComm is not thriving lend free reign to create #EchoChambers or stand pat on 'time-tested methods'...if you catch my drift? #SacklerSciComm
Speaker Laurie Weingart @lrwpgh of @CarnegieMellon definitely understands the importance of strong visuals in effective science communication. Great slides! #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/LaShE3bHy5
@RWSmolensJr @HowardGobstein @LouWoodley @brookesimler @michiganstateu @JohnBesley Disagree. When I was a grad student, my career trajectory didnt exist. Over last many years I’ve consulted w many institutions developing #scicomm, journalism, policy interdisciplinary degree programs. Can we improve? Of course. But we’ve made great progress #SacklerSciComm
Lunch conversations #sacklerscicomm: (1) there needs to be more diversity; (2) we need to hear from more practitioners of #scicomm; (3) the incentive structure for academics REALLY needs to change.
Today's the day! Join us from 4-6pm for the first 'Our Table' roundtable discussion, focused on #food access.

@Sheril_ @HowardGobstein @LouWoodley @brookesimler @michiganstateu @JohnBesley #SciComm didn't exist in my undergrad or grad times. At that time, I was asked by Sci's to 'promote' their work- irrelevant point. There was the need for what we all provide & w/ whom we need to interact with. Much has changed, but too little response to.... #SacklerSciComm

Attending #SacklerSciComm today and tomorrow. I hope all y'all others are taking notes. I am not very good at that. Glad to see so many social scientists here today talking about communication science.

@Sarah_Mojarad "Traditional disciplines" as in what, #communications #journalism #PublicRelations #DigitalMedia #advertising...what? #SciComm & esp. social media are interwoven for bringing audiences rich stories abt science research. #SacklerSciComm
Have reported probably 30-40 accounts posting nothing but spam in the #SacklerSciComm tag… would encourage others frustrated with the bots to also hit report then block.

#SacklerSciComm
For some reason watching #SacklerSciComm, the gap between #scicomm professionals and #scicomm researchers is hitting me REALLY hard. Scicomm researchers - do you actively seek out scicomm training? Because you should.
What I'm thinking about these days: credibility and that little blue check mark after Twitter names. @verified #scicred #SacklerSciComm #sciofscicomm https://t.co/UgZAK3jq9H
...study showed that to help people adapt to flooding threat, it's more efficient not to talk about #climatechange, but to focus on the concrete models of adaptation - Granger Morgan at #SacklerSciComm. Here you are with evidence-based #scicomm. You might dislike it, but it works
Looking forward to new insights this week at The Science of Science Communication III at @theNASciences in Washington D.C. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/M0Bdn1Y2QD
#SacklerScicomm Communicating the problem is common sense. Communicating the persistence of the problem at implementation of alternative solutions is mandatory if you want to move from telling people information 2 convincing them of the magnitude and implications. #climatechange
Bruine and Morgan make a great point about peoples' perception of CO2 versue other air pollutents. Public thinks they have similar residence times (wrong, CO2 sticks around 100s of yrs), and if climate change gets too bad we can stop emitting and all will be fine #SacklerSciComm
#Science communication is more effective if we:
- Address what people need and want to know
- Use understandable wording
- Test effectiveness before dissemination
#SacklerSciComm https://t.co/kq8ngdS4zAhttps://t.co/xsqcryy7SJ
Granger Morgan and Wandi Bruine de Bruin share lessons learned about effective #scicomm and interdisciplinary collaborative project work. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/21VvMYshyP

You can't do #scicomm without understanding how people perceive your methods of communication and your actual words. Break your #STEM lingo bubble if you want to achieve anything at all with your communication. #scicomm #interdisciplinary #science
Great advice from Drs Bruine de Bruin & Granger #SacklerSciComm to avoid getting lost in the weeds when talking abt #climatechange #climatechangeshealth https://t.co/N7mM1vgF81
@Paleophile @verified Whoa - now if your remark does not speak to a huge #disappointment or concern for #SacklerSciComm, I don't know what might. #SciComm already suffers from a crisis of #EchoChamber. . .
Exhibit A: multiple talks at #sacklerscicomm have said you need experts from several disciplines to be effective. But currently makes it more difficult to publish resulting interdisciplinary research (bad incentive structure in academia).
"Three key points should be communicated to laypeople re: #climatechange - burning fossil fuels makes more CO2, more CO2 in the air causes the climate to change, once CO2 is in the air, it remains for hundreds of years." #SacklerSciComm
Interdisciplinarity requires vision and leadership in university settings: departments and deans that are willing to experiment outside of their typical nat or social sci boundaries. I'm glad to be part of one of these at @uricels #SacklerSciComm
@FromTheLabBench I did not ever think I might see a day when you would come out with this. Respect goes where it is due. #SciComm training is still not widely endorsed or afforded it would appear. . . #SacklerSciComm panel for next year?!
Point #3 is sticking point that ppl tend not to understand--which means they don't understand that if #climatechange gets bad enough, it cannot be fixed pretty quickly in the way other air #pollution has been fixed. #scicomm #sacklerscicomm https://t.co/cL9crFJvvc
One big flag for me at #sacklerscicomm (I’m guilty of it too): common use of the word “public” as a catch-all. From my bg in media, can tell you that you can’t serve everyone. There are many publics, with many needs. Lack of audience definition makes the job harder.
Do we need to pull in other specialist from the humanities to make this work truly multidisciplinary? What about the storytellers - historians, writers etc #SacklerSciComm
@RickBorchelt 😏. . . you're killing me w/ these #SciComm treasures, sir. It appears that a look under the hood of the #SacklerSciComm might be in order?
A #SciComm Paradox - and opportunity perhaps. We so need more collaboration between academics and practitioners. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/j7jluIHGHB
For some reason watching #SacklerSciComm, the gap between #scicomm professionals and #scicomm researchers is hitting me REALLY hard. Scicomm researchers - do you actively seek out scicomm training? Because you should.
@AshleyInCAISE My favorite slide from their talk was this one, which aims to communicate the impact of climate change. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/pZafKxGXYW
Agreed! The whole "I'm a smart dude doing elite science in a fancy million $ lab and you r a lay person" brought us to the need to have a third conference on #scicomm #science in the first place. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/Ht3aha7bxs
@swilloster Sing it again, say it out loud & with lots of pride. . . #SciComm #SacklerSciComm ~ science does not exist in a bubble: cross-collaboration is a necessity.
I see a lot of threads calling to abolish the term "lay person." When talking to content experts (scientists), I find the distinction very helpful when advocating for the experience of er, lay people. Thoughts? #sacklerscicomm
I'd like to push back on the idea that every scientist should also do #scicomm. Scientists have full time jobs, and are already required to have multiple skill sets. We need more people (and more funding) to fill the gap, rather than give scientists more to do. #SacklerSciComm
Morgan: The public did not distinguish between CO2 and other pollutants, particularly the residence lifetime of CO2; i.e. stopping emission doesn't eliminate past emissions. #SacklerSciComm
Great point from one of live tweeters of #sacklerscicomm today - Follow livestream or live tweets. Or @FromTheLabBench has google doc of notes. #scicomm https://t.co/1DcfcZheD9
And of equal importance, to this #SacklerScicomm audience, is that these hierarchies of credibility create assumptions about what constitutes expertise, status, “evidence”... or, you know, who is chosen to speak on stage. https://t.co/W87iagchtJ
I'd like to push back on the idea that every scientist should also do #scicomm. Scientists have full time jobs, and are already required to have multiple skill sets. We need more people (and more funding) to fill the gap, rather than give scientists more to do. #SacklerSciComm
Well, I think last moderator summed it up nicely: this is a conference for scientists. Pity they aren’t in the room except on the podium (with notable exceptions that prove the rule) #sacklerscicomm https://t.co/7x6EkeLllW
I like the term "lay people/audience" better than "General Public." Lay people just means non-experts on the subject at hand. Doesn't necessarily suggest they are otherwise all the same #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/cTkKszKgMT
I see a lot of threads calling to abolish the term "lay person." When talking to content experts (scientists), I find the distinction very helpful when advocating for the experience of er, lay people. Thoughts? #sacklerscicomm
@analog_ashley It might be a bit easier to facilitate if communicators / #SciComm could be seen as a valued partner in the science/technology research chain of production. Reality though? LabAdmin don't prefer to see it that way...yet. #SacklerSciComm
Don't know if #SacklerSciComm has mentioned #culture, but here in Canada @Scienceadvice has taken the temperature of our #science culture https://t.co/WiVOpHUlYkhttps://t.co/ZQVl1cjZjj
@analog_ashley At @NOAA we have entire communications and education teams whose job is public outreach and education. Academia and other agencies would do well to employ such people #SacklerSciComm
Surprised by the scholars taking potshots at scholarly publishers and university presses at the #SacklerSciComm. These presses are your partners, not your enemies. #ReadUP
@ashleighbraggs Two issues with this IMHO. 1) term "lay person" is embedded in deficit models; 2) lacks nuance in the vast diversity and experience of people and communities. No such thing as one public. #SacklerSciComm
Yes. Instead of expecting all scis to to do individual #scicomm, why not centralize with people who know what they're doing? #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/vYmjwxIhTE
@analog_ashley At @NOAA we have entire communications and education teams whose job is public outreach and education. Academia and other agencies would do well to employ such people #SacklerSciComm
@SnowHydro This points to the conversation w/ Lab management, #HigherEdu org folks and other decision-makers about appropriating a respectful budget for what should be a crucial partner in the science research production chain. #SciComm #SacklerSciComm

A question from a writer. Novel in #scicomm #sacklerscicomm colloquium. Wasn't answered! Where are writers, #informaled (museums etc.) and so many experienced at science communication with public forever? Hoping this gets more diverse in terms of people and institutions.
David Massey: "It is not the communication that is the problem, it is the context into which you are trying to communicate." Mainstream media reports findings correctly, but message gets distorted in the "blogosphere" #SacklerSciComm
Yes,but studies proved times & again that bombastic "science" news titles come out when the comms link breaks between the researchers and the #scicomm teams in the university/research center. So baseline comms awareness and literacy is mandatory for researchers. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/eR87XxH0aY
Yes. Instead of expecting all scis to to do individual #scicomm, why not centralize with people who know what they're doing? #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/vYmjwxIhTE
Doug Massey gets to a central issue w/ #scicomm: It's not really about scientists communicating science better, it's the changes to communication landscape that have made this harder.. information polarization #SacklerSciComm
Time to refresh my teaching collection of worst-practice PowerPoint slides! And maybe for #SacklerSciComm to get a few more expert communicators involved in these cross-disciplinary collaborations.
I'm the curator of the @CPNAS exhibitions #HealthofthePlanet and #TheArcticMelt on view in the galleries at NAS during #SacklerSciComm. Tweet me your questions and comments about the shows! https://t.co/c49SZetu7Y
David Massey: "It is not the communication that is the problem, it is the context into which you are trying to communicate." Mainstream media reports findings correctly, but message gets distorted in the "blogosphere" #SacklerSciComm
Interesting to see how #science reports can be twisted and displayed as promoting various agendas. How can we combat this? We're discussing now at #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/kq8ngdS4zAhttps://t.co/9k5ow3j5Cg
@EngageClimate Yes because you can't do scicomm without talking to researchers, and you can work together to come up with best ways to present research. #SacklerSciComm
Doug Massey: path to Infowars. (& polarization?) #SacklerSciComm @RadioFreeTom where R U in this important discussion? #scicomm https://t.co/LK41GLWPzB
Doug Massey describes “end of the fairness doctrine” - broadcasters discussing both sides of an issue. Sometimes I feel like giving “equal” attention to both sides of a “controversy” - I.e. vaxxing, climate change, white supremacy - is part of the problem #SacklerSciComm
@SnowHydro @Scienceadvice Yes.. I know there is a lot of good Community Based Practice Research in Canada. But maybe #SacklerSciComm wouldn't recognise that as #scicomm
Interesting talk on the “Path to Infowars” including the elimination of the fairness doctrine repealed in 1987 and internet #sacklerscicomm https://t.co/svhm8SGgEm
Massey says changes in communcations landscape started in 1984: Congress deregulates cable TV news. Fox launched in 1986, along w/ proliferation of other cable news channels. End of fairness doctrine thru FCC in 1987. #sacklerscicomm
The bestselling science book published by the @JHUPress —a lowly university press—has sold over three million copies worldwide. Other university presses have similar success stories. #SacklerSciComm
Douglas Massey: the problem is obfuscation not communication in a post-truth society. "Unfortunately, science and support for science has become a partisan issue." #sacklerscicomm
@Sarah_Mojarad @RWSmolensJr @verified @Twitter I still don't think this issue of recent @verified problems addresses the issue I raised initially about public trust of science content shared on social media. #SacklerSciComm
Douglas S. Massey describes the challenges of communicating about research on immigration at #SacklerSciComm. If this topic interests you, you might enjoy our current exhibit at the Keck Center, David Harriman: Mariposa, featuring portraits of recently deported immigrants. https://t.co/yTrfXbDT8L
Doug Massey - Be ready for the counterintelligence that will come after you communicate your data. Have a strategy ready #SacklerSciComm #scicomm #informalscience
@SnowHydro @EngageClimate Or that 👍 I agree that not everyone has to be #scicommer on top of the gazillion duties a researcher has. But at least an awareness which currently doesn't exist for the most part, is (I think) necessary. #SacklerSciComm
David Massey: We're always told not to be political or partisan in science, but unfortunately science has become a partisan issue. Today it is not enough simply to communicate clearly, unfortunately you have to have to prepare for the inevitable counter attack. #SacklerSciComm
And FCC just relaxed regulations on #media ownership in local markets, further limiting diversity of perspectives available to communities. https://t.co/uoxhZdcJ6j #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/LXoAUkojmw
Massey says changes in communcations landscape started in 1984: Congress deregulates cable TV news. Fox launched in 1986, along w/ proliferation of other cable news channels. End of fairness doctrine thru FCC in 1987. #sacklerscicomm
*whispers* are we going to talk about the fact that a lot of this partisan science talk is very rooted in American-centric discussions and not the global landscape or…….. #SacklerSciComm
@NevenaHr @EngageClimate Yes, awareness is good and important. But I don't expect scientists to do all the heavy lifting. Collaboration between scientists & scicommers is key. #SacklerSciComm
Massey takeaways:
-Conservatives have lost trust in science since 1974.
-Whether you like it or not, science has become political.
-Be ready and prepare for the counterintelligence that will come when you communicate science.
#SacklerSciComm #Scicomm
From Doug's discussion we now move to Shanto Iyengar discussing "Party polarization and the decline of evidence-based reasoning" #SacklerSciComm #scicomm #informalscience
Doug Massey--Not enough to communicate clearly & effectively; need counter-strategy to address the attack that will likely come from your narrative #SacklerSciComm
#sacklerscicomm Talk about multidisciplinary, I've learned a lot following the information security/propaganda/intelligence people on twitter. They've been countering disinfo in the form of state intelligence attacks for decades - often in the media. Useful stuff.
Coming up after the break at #SacklerSciComm (3:15 ET): @Liz_Suhay @ErinJNash and I talk about our new project on #SciComm with policymakers (@PublicHeath is our 4th collaborator)

Me: -> Being ready for counter intelligence requires listening and understanding sources of the counter intelligence- keep your enemies closer, get out of your echo chambers #SacklerSciComm
@gmbritton Do "hierarchies of credibility" exclude people through the use of jargon, Latinate language, and long, recursive sentences that others don't want to interrupt? A challenge for #SacklerSciComm
Bias & group affiliation in political parties is influencing belief in evidence-based science if it goes against party line #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/ytHzSHa4G6
interesting that we're talking about political polarization and implicit bias at #sacklerscicomm what happens when those who represent science are a homogenous, clustered group of self-selecting individuals with nothing in common with their various public audiences?
You should also seek out @analog_ashley, who started a scicomm group in grad school, trained and now writes with us @massivesci, and is now training others. Oh, and she presented a poster and gave a talk at SfN yesterday. Worth a conversation while you’re at #SacklerScicomm https://t.co/VY3aJW4LL5
for all the #scicomm researchers at #SacklerSciComm our team at @massivesci actually trains STEM researchers to become better science storytellers. come find me or @gabestein + we can tell you how we turn researchers into #scicomm professionals
@ashleighbraggs The videos from the live webcast will be available for viewing at the Sackler YouTube Channel. Some presentations may be withheld due to embargo of unpublished data. https://t.co/95bBvdDxeM
Seems like an appropriate time to bring up this question.
#SciComm researchers, what's the one thing you wish all scientists knew?
#SacklerSciComm
#MyOneSciCommTweet https://t.co/AaXFP7hqxq
Along the lines @EntoLudwick's tweet... #SciComm researchers, what's the one thing you wish all scientists knew? #MyOneSciCommTweet https://t.co/UYIvunpW0H
Oh no...computer battery is waning...where can I find a plug at #SacklerSciComm?
I don't want to miss out on the Twitter convo - it is making the colloquium so much richer.
@biascientist @ocaptmycapt @FromTheLabBench I'm not a fan of "public" or "general public" unless I feel confident that the person using it understands that *other scientists* (those not in the field/speciality of the communicator) are included in that group. #SacklerSciComm
Doug Massey, Princeton University highlights decline in trust in science for those associated with conservative political ideology #sacklerscicomm https://t.co/lc15RYcpv6
@biascientist @ocaptmycapt @FromTheLabBench That said, "lay public" may not be ideal, either, but can be a clearer way of indicating a group of people without formal STEM education/training. "Non-specialists" can work in its place, when appropriate. #SacklerSciComm
Would love to talk about more about outreach outside of science venues and "science events". If you're doing #scicomm at a museum, university or a science labeled event.. you've already selected for people who want to know about science. #SacklerSciComm
Iyengar: Strategies for countering political polarization: "1-Kinder, gentler rhethoric from high places <audience laughs cynically>. 2-Interpersonal contact btwn groups." Did anyone catch the others? #sacklerscicomm
#sacklerscicomm Ultimately this has nothing to do with party, it's ideological extremity, it just happens in US Republicans are more extreme at the moment, or extreme on the *polled questions*.
I'm excited about watching the webcast for #SacklerSciComm but I'm surprised at the huge number of words on these slides (content great). Maybe #scicomm researchers need more practice on technical communication?
Citizens Climate Lobby have done a great job of brining Democrats and Republicans together around #climatechange, is there a representative from this organization at this conference? Good to know best practices from those on the ground. #SacklerSciComm
My q: for @saiyengar: are there data re: trust of local or regional media outlets based on political party (vs. larger online & MSM outlets)? #SacklerSciComm
#sacklerscicomm This could be better framed in terms of ideologic extremity, rather than "partisanship". If you attack "extremity" people will feel less singled out than if you attack their party, after all, no one considers themselves an extremist.
@SnowHydro Absolutely - most of our bloggers are scientists themselves or have a strong mandate to "get the science right." We also evaluate the blogs before accepting them into our syndication! ^TL
In 1947, founders of modern @sciam wrote "the common denominator [of its audience] is the interested layman: the scientific professional who is a layman in departments outside his own." #SacklerSciComm
Ken Prewitt (Moderator) We don't believe we have no commonality with the public, but we have to deal with those beliefs that are out there. #SacklerSciComm
#sacklerscicomm Making it about extremity also allows us to treat the real problem - ideological extremity! It really doesn't matter if liberal or conservative, denialism lives in the fringes.
@FromTheLabBench All male / white speaker panels just shouldn't be a thing at #ANY conference today - outside of a Cheetoh puff conference🤭 #SacklerSciComm
@joesbigidea True. But , still room for broadening audiennces. Proud that 22% of #SciPubRVA attendees classified themselves as "not really into science". #SacklerSciComm
If judging #SacklerSciComm takeaways from panelist composition: 1) young and non-white people don't have anything to say about #scicomm, & 2) #scicomm researchers don't actually need to be good communicators (if judging by slides)

Yes! THAT! SO MANY YESes ! 👍 don't forget that if you are a true expert in one thing, you probably are rly rly not in many others! Long gone is the era of the great thinkers who knew everything there was to know about our world. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/i8CNryYMHC

The NAS Great Hall celebrates the history and significance of science as it was understood in 1924, when the building opened. The iconography was designed by artist Hildreth Meiere. It looks like a mosiac, but is actually painted. More: https://t.co/W4LyDq66AI #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/7utY4SqkCY
Disheartened to see such flagrant politicization of science and such blatantly partisan messaging from the National Academies. Mere hours after lecturing on how to effectively communicate, they insult and disparage half of the country. Talk about echo chambers! #SacklerSciComm
#sacklerscicomm There is some selective presentation of data here. Overall vaccination rates may be steady but there are pockets of low take - with resulting increases in outbreaks in pockets of resistance.
From my perspective, there's a problem of putting the science out there and letting it "speak for itself"; refusing to follow up or clarify. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/59x8udiO2L
This is a huge oversimplification. MSM message isn't distorted in blogosphere as a whole. Perhaps in certain (small) sections of the web. But @ScienceBorealis syndicates >100 science blogs that don't 'distort' research. Journos are also to blame for some distortion. https://t.co/tPPgOmVS5c
Why do economically disadvantaged groups consistently not complete the MMR vaccine series? For the Philly study "FIX the clinics!" #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/HSt9Ok58y3
#SacklerScicomm you have to be kidding me, telling me that Andrew Wakefield's and his accomplices #pseudoscience did not influence the vaccination rates. 😶
CDC report of vaccine rates for US children suggests that rates haven't changed much before/after the false vaccine-related claims. Was a surprise to me. https://t.co/r0vy0O8KVA #sacklerscicomm
Q: though data indicates steady vaxx rates, there are more recent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. How do you explain if it’s not due to misinformation? #SacklerSciComm
Are we really directly contracting structural barriers VS beliefs in terms of explaining behavior related to sci issues? I'm pretty sure these things aren't mutually exclusive - beliefs and barriers combine. #sacklerscicomm
Bob Hornik: Instead of beginning w/ scientific #misinformation, we should start w/ behavioral issues of concern. Not all misinformation is a problem. Sometimes inaccurate communication about misinformation is the problem. #SacklerSciComm
How NAS stays objective: show example of 95% R viewership and 95% D viewership, blame all of it on R! There are echo chambers on both sides and #SacklerSciComm is one of them. Present the data and keep your political spin out of it! Is that too much to ask?
#sacklerscicomm So if vaccine disinformation isn't a problem, why do all the outbreaks keep happening in vaccine-refusing enclaves? Why have we lost ground on pertussis? Why is Italy seeing an enormous outbreak? Disagree very strongly.
Just asking myself whether we as scholars run the same “deficit“ risk of falsely assuming the research being shared here at #SacklerSciComm to diffuse into a changed #scicomm practice, almost osmotically? It won't. https://t.co/bs1HDdImwn
Surprised to see only aggregated data (and one plot split by above/below poverty line) used to make the argument that there hasn't been a dip in vacceine levels at all. For example, MMR vaccination rates quite different in Mississippi & Colorado
#SacklerSciComm
Are we really directly contracting structural barriers VS beliefs in terms of explaining behavior related to sci issues? I'm pretty sure these things aren't mutually exclusive - beliefs and barriers combine. #sacklerscicomm
Is "misinformation" a focus on deficit model? Scicomm needs to focus on underlying motivations and framing a relevant call to action for desired outcomes. #sacklerscicomm
@DoctorZen I didn't get the impression they were demeaning posters per se. Just lamenting many students aren't getting the option to give scientific talks as well #SacklerSciComm
I run a scicomm training program for PhD students, @NU_RSG. Would love to chat with others who do similar, and share (1) what do you do in your training that is most successful and (2) how do you know it works? Please introduce yourself if you're at #SacklerSciComm
Well, I think you'd be hard pressed to hear a talk about the practice of #scicomm that doesn't echo messages discussed at #SacklerSciComm. https://t.co/1P4AFbqiiA
Infuriating indeed! If u take 50 states data in a mash you'll never see significant differences. Even if 1 state's an outlier drowned in the big data, we talk of millions of people there. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/qKFMx7czbS
Surprised to see only aggregated data (and one plot split by above/below poverty line) used to make the argument that there hasn't been a dip in vacceine levels at all. For example, MMR vaccination rates quite different in Mississippi & Colorado

Spotted some #RussianCollusion right in the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. A lovely one, though #CHEMISTRY #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/kFSNlruv07
Hornik takeaway: If you're trying to change behavior (health, environmental), focus on the behavior & why the audience(s) are behaving as they are — then develop solution(s). Don't assume information is the main/only issue. It's complex. #sacklerscicomm #scicomm #conservation
@mlpaulsen @NU_RSG Do you know the folks at @RELATEatUM? @ElyseTheGeek was in town earlier this week, but I think she had to leave before #SacklerSciComm started up. But it's worth making a virtual connection!
@FromTheLabBench It's where the tires meet the road of the #SciComm vehicle. . .beliefs (tires) adapt/become scared/go flat/blow out/etc from the ever-changing road conditions (barriers). #SacklerSciComm
Susan Scrimshaw: Cultural literacy is essential for effective health comms. We assume our recommendations are possible: but think about how “easy” it is to avoid being bitten by a mosquito in Puerto Rico RIGHT NOW. #SacklerSciComm
Scrimshaw: The limits of #scicomm - you can tell people why they need to worry about mosquitos, but how can someone in Puerto Rico avoid mosquitos right now? Information is not enough to combat infectious disease #SacklerSciComm
@nuclearkatie Your point speaks to #AudienceCentered communications period, whether it be #SciComm, #HigherEdRecruitingComms, #CorpComms, #CrisisComms, etc. . . AND that is truly the base from where we all would best be starting from. #SacklerSciComm
"One message does not fit all" - Susan Scrimshaw on understanding cultural, language, and education of the audience you are trying to reach #SacklerSciComm #communityengagement #international #Local
Susan Scrimshaw discussing the need for inclusion (and work on!) cultural understanding in order to have successful communication on #Ebola #Zika. #SacklerSciComm
Reminds me of @chris0dye plenary at 2016 #AAASmtg https://t.co/6tXEoVtfyj
Susan Scrimshaw advocating "iterative consultative and action relationships with communities" to frame messages. I just went to @PCORI annual mtg last week and #sacklerscicomm should meet them.
#sacklerscicomm Susan Scrimshaw: Media literacy is essential. We need to know how people interpret #SciComm thru a media literacy lens. --> Finally, someone has explicitly mentioned the importance of MEDIA LITERACY. Thank you!
Earlier in the day there was lots of discussion about experiments in #scicomm but all the research presented is on traditional examples. How do we square that circle? #SacklerSciComm
Great talk about application of anthropology in #scicomm , Great but not new information by any stretch of imagination. "One message does not fit all" is not new information #SacklerSciComm
Question: Dpes the message from Susan about NAS informing the nation and with regards to gentle messaging lose impact due to the fiercely partisan messaging a few speakers ago? #sacklerscicomm
Unfortunate we're only on round 3 of the "repeat your message 7 times" strategy of informing this audience. More work to do. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/jwhbCrsIpU
#sacklerscicomm Susan Scrimshaw: An example of why cultural understanding & diverse teams are critical in effective #SciComm -- When discussing pregnancy RISKS in Spanish-speaking communities, riesgo (RISK) did not translate well, but peligro (DANGER) did translate well.
Two takeaways from Scrimshaw:
-Complexity of terminology is a major barrier
-One message does not fit all
-Increase social mobilization and community engagement
#SacklerSciComm #scicomm
Much more of a systems approach to what's really happening - look not just at visible events, but underlying structures and mental models at play #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/aDBt4suOTB
@FromTheLabBench Pretty ridiculous given the diversity of the #scicomm community in 2017. So many incredible individuals to consider - writers, podcasters (shout out @_lindsayp!) digital web series folks, public speakers... countless outstanding options #SacklerSciComm
Can learn ways to better communicate by engaging with your intended audience. Susan Scrimshaw, Nevin Scrimshaw, "...the women taught us how to communicate with them, we ended up developing songs and working with the popular radio program on how to reach women"#SacklerSciComm https://t.co/oWs2FtVzGi
Doesn’t a reallllly high percentage of the population need to be vaccinated in order to reach herd immunity for measles? Is I️t possible that vaccination rates could be 90% but that just isn’t enough to prevent an outbreak? #SacklerSciComm
Lotta critical points in this thread. Striking to think of how much has changed since the last #SacklerSciComm. I remember an audience member tsk-tsking me for bringing up values! https://t.co/3KASVAjD1l
If judging #SacklerSciComm takeaways from panelist composition: 1) young and non-white people don't have anything to say about #scicomm, & 2) #scicomm researchers don't actually need to be good communicators (if judging by slides)
@Sarah_Mojarad Social media often offers the fastest way to communicate an interpretation of your work or path to correct a manipulated morning news headline. #SciComm #SacklerSciComm
#SacklerSciComm: It is a moral imperative for communicators to engage w the social impacts of research. They have power over public opinion by virtue of technical expertise. Ironic case in point: eponymous Sacklers got rich by persuading the public that Oxycontin is safe.
Who wants to fund an alternative to the #SacklerScicomm meeting? Judging by the Twitter engagement & critique, there's a big group that has a lot to add to the conversation.
True. Lots of rehashing, but the audience is evolving. Prior naysayers are at the table & that's a promising development. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/SKgOfynuju
@JLVernonPhD Granted, I haven’t been able to follow live all day, but the summaries and tweets I’m reading sound like discussions I’ve heard elsewhere for many years. I suspect you’ve heard them too.
@_SciComm @aaas I am unable to attend #SacklerSciComm because you scheduled it for the same days as the annual meeting of the National Communication Association @natcom WHY?
Bear with me. I know #SacklerSciComm is currently focused on #scicomm for politicized/contentious sci topics. But this is also most difficult area in which to change attitudes, much less behaviors, with comm alone. Is exclusive discussion of this type of scicomm best use of time?
Great point, Ian. Leave politics out of the conversation and you’ll have one less barrier to overcome. #scicomm #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/7SPYPuWt0M
@Sarah_Mojarad Wish I could tune in! In my experience, there are ways to discuss issues that have been politicized without relying on politically charged language. Makes it easier to explore topics while avoiding reflexive reactions among those all along the political spectrum.
@_klburke Yeah I'm torn - I do think these areas of study are really important, and the focus can't be ALL areas of study. But I was hoping to see more research on innovative comm modalities for a variety of sci topics and goals from #SacklerSciComm.
An impressive example of truly professional collaboration between hard and soft sciences to do real evidence-based #scicomm. That works. Exactly in the same way you planned it. It's kind of seeing this true love that everyone talks about but no one ever saw. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/Zn8oUYzYko

Erin Nash: Will be conducting qualitative interviews w/ 30 members of Congress to understand policymakers' engagement w/ science (and scientists). #scipol #SacklerSciComm
Why should science communication be any different from “normal” communication? Strategies for persuasive messaging remain the same whether you address social, economic, or scientific issues. #sacklerscicomm
Erin Nash: Findings of our research will provide best practices for facilitating scientists' engagement w/ policymakers -- to be used by @AAAS (and hopefully by other organizations, individuals!) #scipol #SacklerSciComm

I'd like to push back on the idea that every scientist should also do #scicomm. Scientists have full time jobs, and are already required to have multiple skill sets. We need more people (and more funding) to fill the gap, rather than give scientists more to do. #SacklerSciComm
Cornelia Dean - people don't like the idea of an elite group of people gathering somewhere and saying what should happen. But how do we get to the broader conversation we need? #SacklerSciComm

A quick break in #SacklerSciComm tweets to highlight this #SfNSciComm post from @TorreyTruszko about the #SciComm workshop she organized earlier this week. It was great fun, and it came about because she looked around and said "if not me, who?" https://t.co/OPzu8vHXuc

#SacklerSciComm How about some risk assessment whataboutism? Why are we more worried about CRISPR than autonomous cars (already on the road)? Risks of editing away a somatic disease is less threatening to me than being run over by a computer.
Porteus: some perverse incentives in how we communicate science. Biased toward sensationalist characterization - rewards for showing up in @NYTScience Where is the check in this process? #SacklerSciComm
Matthew Porteus: One of the ethical issues not always discussed related to human #geneediting: How to make this technology accessible to places with lower GDP? [a slight nod to #inequality issues?] #SacklerSciComm
Q for Dr Porteus: editing genes to treat disease isn’t the same as enhancement; but *how* & *where* do we draw that line? Sickle cell - nearsightedness - obesity - Down Syndrome - ASD? Who decides? #SacklerSciComm
Thank you Matthew Porteus for bringing up the problem of sensationalising science and the wrong incentive to do science and the wrong means to advance scientific careers!
#SacklerSciComm
The clearest picture of where wrong incentives bring #scicomm and science itself, by Matthew Porteus. Very far from society #SacklerScicomm https://t.co/KHBnJAbBwr
We've been talking about incentives for scientists all day, but we've only started to talk about value for the non-sci community #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/8UXCLwzcTt
Speaker at #SacklerSciComm claims journalists are incentivized to hype science and that there is no check on this motivation. Nope! Corrections, disdain of your peers--expressed here on Twitter--and reputation are strong motivators to get it right.
Tons of great tips @theNASciences #sacklerscicomm! Some misperceptions as well. Esp. the inferences that professional communicators don’t use data to effectively create change.
@gretabyrum @knightfdn @LatanyaSweeney @EthanZ Some at #sacklerscicomm are discussing bias in algorithms, just like @LatanyaSweeney has revealed. #newschallenge (Overlap of hash tags today)

US is literally "off the chart" in national comparisons of religion-in-public-life and GDP. That's neither good nor bad, says @scheufele. It just IS. We shouldn't be talking about changing that, but about working with that. #SacklerSciComm
Question: Where do you draw the line for distinction between a disease that is “ok” to cure with gene editing vs a “human trait” that isn’t? Could/should you use gene editing to “cure” behavioral traits that are immoral and detrimental to society? e.g. pedophilia #sacklerscicomm
Porteus on fixing sickle cell gene & attendant suffering: caution against conflating genome editing & CRISPR CAS9 (latter is a tool for former); huge #pophealth benefits, but challenges & ethics of making available for global use #sacklerscicomm https://t.co/Jr28m5prwZ
good comments by @scheufele reinforcing that gene editing, other technologies pose questions and probs that can't be addressed by science alone- tensions are centered on culture, values, beliefs #SacklerSciComm

[.. what initially brought me to @AAAS]
@scheufele Too many societal issues are coming up too fast. The more religious people are, the less likely they are to think scientists are capable of guiding new techs in a responsible way. Need conversations to discuss benefits but also perils and pitfalls. #SacklerSciComm

Q from audience: Who decides difference between disease and medical enhancement, and what to "treat" w/ #geneediting?
Porteus: Certainly not me.. there need to be places for people to participate in the discussion earlier. #SacklerSciComm #CRISPR
.@scheufele great talk. 1) Gene editing for therapy as opposed to enhancement is preferred by public, 2) public not concerned if the gene modification is heritable, 2) people place trust on info about gene editing equally on scientist & non-scientists #SacklerSciComm
Gr8 huge Q about where you draw line between treatment & enhancement (sickle cell vs deafness vs ASD etc etc). Porteus (partial) answer: engage patients w disease in decision making, v broad convo needed #sacklerscicomm
"Research-based approaches [...] don't just allow us to bring the best science to public conversations but also loopback from those conversations and inform our and scientific enterprise." @scheufele at #SacklerSciComm
On the #sacklerscicomm question of how to decide where to draw the line on human gene editing: @_devangm provided a fascinating framework for thinking about the question: https://t.co/N7lj7KaRIu
What picture do you use to illustrate your point? What is this picture conveying to the audience? Finally the importance of #visualcomm mentioned at the #SacklerSciComm
#SacklerSciComm
Very good point made: in a democracy, the public should be involved early at the decision process re: scientific technologies approval. One major hurdle to be creatively overcome - too many ppl involved slows or completely inhibits any decision taking.
My takeaway from the current #SacklerSciComm session: improving #scicomm is a lot about improving public debate; need to grapple w complex issues more effectively & w more humility
#SacklerSciComm Matthew Porteus: NIH doesn't have patient advocates on grant review panels for gene editing proposals. Panel is primarily academic peers in the gene editing discipline. My reaction and other audience members around me: WTF?!?!
Cory Dean: Should news media convene public discussions about issues such as social & ethical issues associated with human genome editing (on analogy of media orgs convening candidate forums)? #SacklerSciComm
Does anyone know what the spam they're talking about on the #SacklerSciComm hashtag? When I look all I see are live tweets and discussions on how homogenously white the panel's been. And I'd like to believe that the latter isn't the spam of which they speak.
This is an interesting piece, but doesn’t touch on a deeper issue: who gets to decide what is “debilitating”? Many people live & thrive with, & embrace what others consider “defects” #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/JcXjcKljgK
On the #sacklerscicomm question of how to decide where to draw the line on human gene editing: @_devangm provided a fascinating framework for thinking about the question: https://t.co/N7lj7KaRIu

Side question: There have been a couple of references at #SacklerSciComm to Asilomar conference. It happened the year I started college (and I have a LOT of grey in my beard). How many people in audience know what it was?
At Nat Geo SnapChat team growing faster than any other platform team. "Ephemeral content will provide the best engagement rate [in 2018]" --https://t.co/PAQKTHfJUx Why no mentions #SacklerSciComm?
Did @nytimes panelist at #SacklerSciComm really just say the old gray lady wasn't sure how to deal with financial conflicts of interest among scientists on which it reports? Seems like a no-brainer---disclose conflicts so readers can make up their own minds. What am I missing?
Porteus is insisting that there’s a “clear” diff between “bringing someone up to normal” vs. improving beyond normal. But he’s not addressing a central concern: what is “normal”, & who gets to define it? #SacklerSciComm
💯disagree with NYT Cornelia Dean. Shouldn't #journalism report the news as well as lead the reader? Consuming news media since childhood, I find tremendous value in the news & views, the analysis, position of the Editorial Boards, and OpEds/debates. #SacklerSciComm #SciComm
Cory Dean notes conflict of interest “the intractable issue” in CRISPR news coverage. Potential for bias ALWAYS needs to be disclosed and publics decide how to weigh that #Sacklerscicomm #scicomm
At #SacklerSciComm @rickspaceweiss brings up important point: equity issues need to be discussed early and often when it comes to #GeneEditing (and other enhancements).
Related to #SacklerSciComm mention of scientists who are simultaneously pioneering new technologies & questioning their application, Kevin Esvelt inspires me https://t.co/PEjF3EzcGE
A gene-editing pioneer is now saying: Please do NOT use gene-editing to get rid of invasive species. Fortunately, New Zealand is working on other options: https://t.co/jxF0rDlB98

Amazing point from #SacklerSciComm MC on power of storytelling! I can't recommend @WiredForStory enough if you want to really understand the integral components of story. #scicomm
Frank Senso makes #storytelling sound (and look) easy - it's all about compelling characters, overcoming obstacles, to achieve a worthy outcome. Practice your stories. #sacklerscicomm #scicomm
Frank Sesno: "Compelling characters overcoming obstacles to achieve a worthy outcome - if we can't tell stories about science, we can't tell stories about anything." Brilliant. #SacklerSciComm
Great stories are compelling characters overcoming obstacles to achieve a worthy outcomes. THAT'S WHAT SCIENCE IS -Frank Sesno #scicomm #sacklerscicomm
#SacklerScicomm speakers keep saying stories are mainly a better way to teach (#deficitmodel)? Surely they do more than that? I suspect stories are great because they also allow us to #frame and talk about things like motivations (#warmth) and effort (#competence) ...
@JohnBesley Well, they talked about stories simplistically in discussion, but we have yet to see any of the research presentations talk about storytelling strategies adapted to particular issues, audiences, etc. I'd like to see more of that. #SacklerSciComm
We do science booths (nanomaterials, climate modeling) at Seattle farmers markets. See @SciMarketUW. We've learned:
1. Interaction is key. No one wants a lecture
2. People want to share their views. Listen
3. Engaging w adults works! People ❤️ science
#SacklerSciComm https://t.co/ntoS1tbmAi
Would love to talk about more about outreach outside of science venues and "science events". If you're doing #scicomm at a museum, university or a science labeled event.. you've already selected for people who want to know about science. #SacklerSciComm

Sad to see the lack of diversity at #SacklerSciComm. Diversity in science grows from within. Make yourself heard, and don't forget there's a community our there for you.
Question
Active STEM researchers:
If provided with relevant training/professional dev't, would you *rather* engage with broad audiences via:
(@ reply for "other")
Key to this: orgs need to pay attention, too! Hard to be heard if not given the opportunity to get on the stage. Really, really hope #SacklerSciComm works harder next time. https://t.co/yep0JavR8Z

Lessons for future science conferences from #SacklerSciComm:
1) fun music necessary at transitions and 2) journalists as moderators is a very good thing.
@Atul_Gawande talking about the mistrust of science. "Science is a commitment to a systematic approach to knowledge - which may be counterintuitive. Contradictory evidence can always emerge." #SacklerScicomm https://t.co/zvEG1jxAC2
So far, @Atul_Gawande has been rather powerful, his imagery is engaging & provocative to the #SciComm questions that have been dealt w/ all day long at #SacklerSciComm. https://t.co/VBVVwdThSG
@Atul_Gawande talking about the mistrust of science. "Science is a commitment to a systematic approach to knowledge - which may be counterintuitive. Contradictory evidence can always emerge." #SacklerScicomm https://t.co/zvEG1jxAC2
#sacklerscicomm Atul Gawande Science is a commitment to a systematic way of thinking and explaining the universe. Scientists are making a commitment to a not-normal way of thinking – going against common sense, divinity explanations, personal experiences in many cases.
"we most resist scientific facts when they contradict our intuitions and beliefs...especially when they contradict our actions" @Atul_Gawande #sacklerscicomm
From @Atul_Gawande: “scientists have healthy skepticism, suspended judgement, & disciplined imagination.” Not the way most people think about the world. #SacklerScicomm #scicomm
Heard at #Sacklerscicomm "vaccines rates have not declined significantly" and 2 hours later "vaccines rates have plunged". Let's get the facts straight
Once embedded, beliefs are extremely hard to change and trust in the scientific community is in decline says keynote speaker @Atul_Gawande #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/Ep0evIFK1t
Keynote speaker's claim that trust in scientific community has been steadily declining is incorrect. The reality is that trust in All institutions has been declining in the USA. #Sacklerscicomm
People don't dismiss scientific authority - they just pick which science has the highest authority - "my research is better than your research" @Atul_Gawande #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/KSwcgQ9oIw
"we most resist scientific facts when they contradict our intuitions and beliefs...especially when they contradict our actions" @Atul_Gawande #sacklerscicomm
Great point being made from @Atul_Gawande: people don't dismiss science in *general,* they dismiss a *specific* scientific authority, and say their *own* scientific authority provides the stronger, truer science. Important implications!! #SacklerSciComm

@Atul_Gawande 5 hallmarks of pseudo-science: Conspiracy, alternative experts, different data or logic or demand for greater research and proof. #SacklerSciComm
I managed to attend two conferences in DC today and live tweet from both—sometimes simultaneously. Apologies. You probably shouldn’t follow me. #SacklerSciComm #AmericanEdu
"The discussion has changed. We need to differentiate between #science and #pseudoscience." #SacklerSciComm
Five hallmarks:
1. Allege conspiracy
2. Provide fake experts w/ no sci record
3. Cherry pick data and papers
4. Employ false analogies
5. Insist on impossible standards
Asserting true facts of good science is shown to be more effective than trying to rebut or debunk bad science, since our brains are hardwired to defend against attacks to our preconceived views. #SacklerSciComm
#sacklerscicomm Keynote: When people dismiss science, they are dismissing science authorities & not claiming that science is wrong. Rather they are putting their trust in other entities that are saying our data/facts/experience are the truer ones than the scientific authorities
Why is it so difficult to combat misinformation? One can unintentionally deepen beliefs in a myth due to the backfiring effect. Misinformation must effectively be replaced with a new narrative. The Debunking Handbook @Atul_Gawande #sacklerscicomm #scicomm
.@Atul_Gawande is calling out the role of active disinformation campaigns...I would love to see the discussion at #SacklerSciComm tackle this, and how we support each other in confronting these concerted, targeted attacks on science & scientists
Dead silence and rapt attention at the keynote during Atul Gawande’s powerful talk about Scientific Mistrust at #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/qGmtfyPYxu
Having a scientific understanding of the world is about helping people to understand who to trust WHILE maintaining the belief that you never know who to trust. That’s a complicated thing. @Atul_Gawande #SacklerSciComm
In his Mistrust of Science talk @Atul_Gawande references @MarkHoofnagle (blog on science denialism/pseudoscience https://t.co/hnGRidSQNh )
Gawande suggests positive evidence to counter pseudosci arguments

"We don't want to focus with the public on what is wrong with vaccine myth. Instead we want to focus on the fact that having children vaccines has proven over time vastly safer than not doing it." @Atul_Gawande at #SacklerScicomm #scicomm #
. @atulgawande calls out false consensus on safety of opioids as an example of failure of majority science opinion. It really was indefensible, no one read the damn citation that started this mess. Also, down with the damn pain score. #SacklerSciComm
Our current toolkit for evaluating science - Review evidence, pedigree of scientists, relying on consensus - all more flawed than we acknowledge #SacklerSciComm
@Atul_Gawande Breaks through to the uncomfortable elephant in the room, acknowledging that medicine and pharma, present company included, contributed to the opioid epidemic. Science not infallible. #SacklerSciComm
We can't always trust the scientific consensus: @Atul_Gawande confronting the painful truth that he advised patients that opioids were safe based on the scientific consensus: "we caused the opiod crisis" #SacklerSciComm
How about social media platforms like Twitter train scientists to communicate more effectively so we can move beyond pseudoscience?#SacklerSciComm @OpenImpactTeam
@Atul_Gawande sadly continues the trend at #SacklerSciComm of politicizing science. Many talks today on gentle messaging and wider audience, all thrown in the trash by the keynote speaker+echo chamber who paint R’s as broadly as those generalizing Muslims to be terrorists. #irony
Science is social enterprise... and has been self-correcting. But up-close it isn't pretty. Need to confront "the elitism of the process and the democratization of the data" @Atul_Gawande #SacklerSciComm
@Atul_Gawande is the perfect example of a good #science communicator. He weaves an interesting story, connects with the audience, demonstrates passion & delivers a clear message. #SacklerSciComm
“Knowledge lives in body of the work more than any one individual.” Science self correcting over time, but up close: a “rickety looking vehicle” #scicomm #SacklerSciComm @Atul_Gawande
@Atul_Gawande I've been subjected to the peer review process and the New Yorker fact checking process. And the New Yorker process kicks ass every time. #SacklerSciComm
Takeaway @Atul_Gawande:
It’s not whether you’re pro- or anti-science that’s the issue. People are choosing pseudoscience they agree with over science that they don’t. The real issue is whether you can tell the difference.
#sacklerscicomm

Scientists need humility, compassion, and curiosity #SacklerSciComm
Potential #SciComm exercise: For every scientific conference you go to check out a controversial topic's conference, blog post, forum, etc. [contemplations after #SacklerSciComm ]
https://t.co/F0E6N2Cxmh
Agree more support for #broaderimpacts & boundary orgs is needed, BUT scientists absolutely SHOULD have to do *some* form of #scicomm. There's a continuum of what that actually entails though, and should factor in responsibility, support, and skills. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/iwvkNC0tAC
I'd like to push back on the idea that every scientist should also do #scicomm. Scientists have full time jobs, and are already required to have multiple skill sets. We need more people (and more funding) to fill the gap, rather than give scientists more to do. #SacklerSciComm
Talk by @Atul_Gawande at #SacklerSciComm has an audience at the end of a long day of academic talks completely enthralled with no slides. Because he’s using genuine anecdotes, admittedly unsure ideas, and emotional adjectives. A very human talk about science and #scicomm
"It's even more than WHAT we think -- it's HOW we think that matters." @Atul_Gawande just rocked it at #SacklerSciComm!! if I could only tune in for one message, I'm so glad it was this one :D
Atul Gawande speaking on science communication tonight @theNASEM. Says @NewYorker fact checking is more rigorous than some journal peer review. We should take note! #SacklerSciComm @Atul_Gawande https://t.co/q5Uw96DF8C

#sacklerscicomm What’s the scientist’s responsibility for the gap between science and understanding? The decline of trust may be shared by scientists speaking in jargon and a distrustful, naive society.
"The most difficult topics are the ones where we are asking people to engage in pain now for the sake of an invisible problem where the pain will only have gained far in the future." @Atul_Gawande at #SacklerScicomm #scicomm
"it is unfortunate that scientists are also people and fall pray to the same biases than other human beings". As usual, Alan Leshner (former @aaas CEO) is right on #Sacklerscicomm
You know why? Because The New Yorker fact-checkers are paid and peer-review scientific referees are not. Simple. #Sacklerscicomm #PeerReview https://t.co/8lm72sutIr
.@atulgawande on climate change at #SacklerSciComm - it's like primary care, long term risk adjustment with clear benefits but hard to see immediate visible results. An apt analogy.
Scientists face their own fallibility in light of data Working on important problems will always have consequences Best surgeons deal w uncertainty by owning and learning from mistakes. Gawande #SacklerSciComm
My take on @Atul_Gawande's A to a great Q about difference btwn surgeons & geoscientists. Surgeons must grapple with uncertainty, decide and move on quickly. Do we? Nope. We are like the primary care doc acting in geologic time, you don't have to listen to us. 😂 #sacklerscicomm

.@Atul_Gawande gives props to his @NewYorker colleague @malcolmgladwell and his skills at celebrating people who have insight and being able to communicate how that matters to people’s individual lives. #SacklerSciComm
@Atul_Gawande The whole field of solutions journalism #soljourno helps to illuminate what's possible. One of the great practitioners is Malcolm @Gladwell #SacklerSciComm
@AnneBell @Atul_Gawande @NewYorker @malcolmgladwell ...and to celebrate or embrace the #storytelling that raises interest & engagement in the sciences ~ #SciComm #SacklerSciComm
@SunshineMenezes Really wish I was in attendance. Learning more about #SacklerSciComm now — happy to see this conversation thread happening. Kudos to you @SunshineMenezes for sharing this.
@drdarsci Right?! 👏🏽🎯 B/T @Atul_Gawande, @alanalda @alda ~ what a succinct value they express: relaying the #storytelling & stories in a [#relevant & #empathetic] way that people care about & [stay engaged or motivated by sciences to want to] understand...#SciComm #SacklerSciComm
h/t @Sarah_Mojarad "The Debunking Handbook" - witness the power of the #SciComm community and its #RaisingOthersUp attitude. . . cheers to #SacklerSciComm for creating the space for all of this. https://t.co/wbsDR7OO7h
@Sheril_ @FromTheLabBench @_lindsayp I have a colleague in HCI who has a rule: when asked to speak on a panel, he asks who else is invited. If the panel is white and male, he declines and provides a list of women and POC. I would suggest the men of #scicomm adopt this rule as well.
Laurie Weingart @carnegiemellon shows how to bridge the gaps with #communication through trust (w your reputation), respect (held in high regard), and liking (wanting to spend time together). #SacklerSciComm #teamwork #collaboration https://t.co/kFD0rB4wGn

It was a busy day for @ILSIRF! @FoodSystem_CAMO was at #Sustainableag in #KansasCity talking about food #supplychains & @libbymwilliams was at #SacklerSciComm in #DC learning more about science communications! https://t.co/kMQQpNSfTb
Mojoshark: RT CocoNell2: You can be both #passionate and #objective as a scientists - they do not, and SHOULD NOT counteract each other #SacklerScicomm
After-hours #SacklerSciComm post, from afar... Nice to see several stalwart #scicomm tweeters in the mix today, and *great* to see a growing, engaged, and energized mix of ppl from a wide diversity of backgrounds and interests. Looking forward to tomorrow!
@jamieloizzo @FosterDanielD Yeah, at #SacklerSciComm today one speaker talked about the hierarchy of sciences, and social science is not high on the list. And I don't think #agriculture even made it. So a dual-front battle. #teachagchat
@BioBeef i.e. looking to the long game science mostly gets there even if a bit clumsily; scientists know this & deal with it. MSM understandably looks to the shorter game, leaving it often saying things before post-publication peer-review, etc., has kicked in #SacklerSciComm
most of us know that the deficit model is wrong, but we still operate as though it wasn't, because that's what we're "used to" and that's what's "cheapest" and "easiest" and lets us check the deliverable boxes. But we need to do better. #socmar #consmark #scicomm #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/8i9J9vcJTx
@BioBeef Bit off-topic for #SacklerScicomm maybe, but perhaps we (scientists) need to file 'reports' of what we did irrespective of outcome or "discoveries"?
To be clear, I think #SacklerSciComm is a great opportunity and place to share ideas and research but I do like the amount of critical reflection taking place because it's a learning moment for all of us.
A lot of the discussion has been rightly placed at the lack of strong visual communication at #SacklerSciComm But we can't forgot the power of strong public speaking skills -- emotion, connection, and authenticity help #scicomm storytelling as well. Keynote was best of the day
Thought @TheNASciences @CPNAS Science of Science Communication Colloquia was out of my reach but it's streaming! Nov 16 & 17 Register here- https://t.co/eqUM5xRLEb #SacklerSciComm #poorgradstudent

Easy to see real life examples of this, too. #GMOs and Seralini, #vaccines and (say) 'The Health Ranger' (or any number of other people), #glyphosate and taking IARC out of context (a more subtle thing in this case). #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/2SWQluScG5
Great point being made from @Atul_Gawande: people don't dismiss science in *general,* they dismiss a *specific* scientific authority, and say their *own* scientific authority provides the stronger, truer science. Important implications!! #SacklerSciComm
@TheNASciences @CPNAS Science of Science Communication Colloquia is streaming again on Nov 17 Register: https://t.co/o6iugrXiQq #SacklerSciComm #messaging #STEM
Reflecting on Day 1 of #SacklerSciComm. In side convos I heard expressed desire for some clear practicals, which can be somewhat challenging to tease out during discussion on the science of #scicomm, but...
A good summary of what we’re hearing at #SacklerSciComm can be found in 2016 @theNASEM report on Communicating Chemistry. Check out this guide for scientists! https://t.co/jr2Ezy8hvThttps://t.co/t5rURERC3z
Fab day at the #SacklerSciComm meeting. Takeaway: scientists need to find ways to engage in public discourse. With legislators, advocate for important topics rather than specific policies. #scicomm https://t.co/ZrzNIW8De8
Apparently the grad student tuition hike is not coming up at all at #SacklerScicomm. At least according to Twitter. There will be no science to communicate if most grad students quit because they’re taxed on income they don’t make.
@BioBeef To what extent is latter (in part) because of MSM presenting each new thing as a "discovery" and "right", with readers later learning they proved to be wrong? Better to present as on-going story? #SacklerSciComm
I think the latter is largely caused by MSM presenting science as sudden, amazing results instead of a process that takes time & many people. #SacklerSciComm https://t.co/ebAYi3Ntf4
@BioBeef To what extent is latter (in part) because of MSM presenting each new thing as a "discovery" and "right", with readers later learning they proved to be wrong? Better to present as on-going story? #SacklerSciComm
@SnowHydro Yes - that's what I was referring to with "discovery" (focuses on one group, one finding out of many that were part of the new thing, leaves out long backstory, etc.) #SacklerSciComm
Sounds like #SacklerSciComm needs a little help with creating more effective, visual, and engaging #scicomm.
I have just the then 😉 Free email courses and blogs/comics made just for scientists, academics & researchers

For #scicomm with limited budgets, critical questions include "What works?" and "What doesn't?" Tomorrow at #SacklerSciComm, I will run a panel on #scicomm evaluation featuring James Fowler. Link here https://t.co/PRDfHI0kIL at 8:45am Eastern to see us there.
So, I am curious: what would you rather be talking about at the #SacklerSciComm? Social media? Issue specific? Concrete strategies? Asking for a friend.
